Juvenile Dog Training Classes

Your puppy was doing brilliantly. Good sits, great recall, calm, loving natured.
Then one day, your beautifully trained puppy became a pet you no longer recognise.
 Welcome to the Juvenile stage.

The Terrible Teens

Juvenile dogs aged between 7 months and up to 1.5 years can be a handful. This period can be tricky if the training has lapsed and boundaries are not reinforced clearly. This doesn't mean your training has failed. It means your dogs’ mind needs to be directed towards further exciting training that stimulates their concentration and gives them more to do and think about!

With the addition of hormonal surges in their bodies; the drive to seek out dogs of the opposite sex can be a major distraction especially when the females are in season. Male dogs can suddenly become more reactive towards other males. This is all normal in the canine world.

Adolescence can be one of the most challenging stages of dog ownership.

Our exciting cross curricular six-week Juvenile Training course is designed to help you navigate this stage.

What do we work on?

Depending on the breeds attending the course, the content is structured to whether they are more suitable for Agility and or Gundogs skills along with Obedience. The skills taught are aimed to further and strengthen previously learnt skills at Puppy foundation.
Dogs in this class are best trained from the collar and a 4ft flat lead.
Your Juvenile may need to be muzzled.

Skills will include:

  • Off lead Recall with distractions, Recall to Heel

  • Off lead loose lead walking to heel

  • Walking on lead along the pedestrian highway, what to avoid & why.

  • Retrieves with dummies or toys to hand

  • Whistle work, Recall, Stop at a distance

  • Stays with increased duration and distance.

  • Directing your dog through Agility equipment, Tunnel, jumps weaves etc

  • Appropriate interaction with other dogs/resolving reactivity/controlled meet & greet

  • The Leave it Command

  • Prey drive control

  • Understanding how your own responses can influence their behaviour.

A bored dog is a restless dog.

The juvenile course has been designed as a unique approach to teaching skills that a dog and owner should learn to coexist peacefully in the UKs’ 21st Century. There’s a lot to learn; some people book the course twice.

The blend of obedience, agility and gundog skills are teachable to most dogs regardless of their pedigree. The aim is to help you build behaviours that become increasingly reliable in everyday situations and that you may want to further with other trainers in specific areas, such as scent work.
From here, you may want to go on to join an agility or gundog club.
Or you may want to be tested by an examiner, take part in working trials if you have a working dog or be involved with kennel Club competitions.

Six-week course – £150

The Juvenile Training course runs for six weeks and costs £150.

One-to-one training can also be combined with the course if your dog has an issue that would benefit from more individual attention.
