Puppy Training Classes
Bringing home a puppy is exciting. It's also the point at which you suddenly realise just how much there is to learn.
Our six-week Puppy Training course is designed to help you and your puppy build the right foundations from the beginning.
What is Puppy Training?
Puppy training begins when you bring your 10 - 12 week old puppy home from the breeder. You will begin the process of toilet training, crate training, feeding and sleeping routines, and bonding within the family unit pack.
Once you pup has had all their vaccinations and a health check from your vet usually at 12 – 14 weeks of age, you will then be able to socialise your pup with the outside world and join a fundamental puppy class to learn and teach the correct training methods to ensure your pups grows up to be a calm well socialised dog with real skills you can build on and to be able take part in further activities such as Scent work, Agility or Gundog that will require the basic obedient skills.
Puppy classes build the scaffolding of learning for your pup. You may have had dogs before. Each puppy is a new sentient being and they need to have the experience of learning amongst other pups their own age.
What will we work on at Puppy level?
Training is also for the owner, understanding Responsible Dog Ownership, the UK laws around owning a dog and how the breed you have chosen will impact your life. Our six week classes are based on the Kennels Club’s Good Citizen Dog Scheme. We cover the fundamental skills such as:
Teaching the focus and communication method between the pup and the owner
How to settle your pup to be calm amongst other pups and distractions
Teaching your pup about Separation with distance and duration
The three basic body positions
The four basic hand signals
Puppy Recall
Essential basics for loose lead walking
Grooming coat care & vet body checks
The importance of playing with their owners
Just as importantly, you'll learn why your puppy behaves the way they do and how to reinforce good behaviour outside the class. All the activities will help to build confidence between you and your pup. Your puppy will develop a broader understanding of their world and you’ll be ready to move up to the level 1, Juvenile class.
Puppy Play session
At the end of each puppy class for 5 minutes, we have a puppy play session. This is to allow us to observe how the pups meet and greet each other nicely, to observe their hierarchical roles and pack behaviours and to gently correct dominance or anxieties arising out of the pack playtime.
